Blow flies are metallic-colored insects, larger than regular house flies, and often seen in shades of black, green, blue, or copper. They are known for their loud buzzing and habit of laying eggs on rotting meat. Depending on the species, the larvae develop into adults in 7 to 15 days. Blow flies are commonly found around trash, pet waste, and spoiled food, posing a significant nuisance for homes and businesses.
Since 1989, the Oriental latrine fly, a type of blow fly, has been an ongoing issue in Southern California. These flies thrive in large numbers near dumpsters and shaded areas, especially during summer. Larvae located near homes may migrate indoors, maturing into adult flies and becoming a problem. Proper waste disposal and sanitation can effectively reduce the risk of blow fly infestations.
The little house fly (Fannia canicularis) has a unique flight pattern, often seen hovering in open spaces but seldom landing on food, which reduces the chance of food contamination compared to common house flies.
They lay their eggs in decomposing plant matter, compost, or animal waste, such as that from rabbits and chickens. Their life cycle, from egg to adult, takes around 24 days. While they can be a nuisance, they favor decaying matter, which means they pose less risk indoors.
The false stable fly, Muscina stabulans, is somewhat larger and bulkier than your usual house fly. With a dark gray body, it doesn’t bite like the true stable fly. However, it may enter homes to lay its eggs on slightly spoiled food.
The maggots of this fly can often be found in decomposing vegetable matter and animal waste. Its life cycle spans approximately 14 days. Though it isn’t harmful in terms of biting, its presence indoors can be quite annoying, especially when eggs are laid. Knowing its patterns can help manage infestations.
Black garbage flies are small, shiny black insects, about 1/5″” long. These slender pests thrive in garbage waste, particularly in rural areas with sporadic trash collection. They aren’t typically seen in large numbers in cities but can be more abundant in areas with poor waste management.
With a life cycle of around ten days, they develop rapidly in garbage. Ensuring proper garbage disposal is key to limiting their population.
Stable flies are often mistaken for house flies, but they have a pointed beak that allows them to bite. While they usually feed on livestock like horses and cattle, they can bite humans as well, especially when they move indoors during rainy seasons.
These flies are more than just an annoyance—they are a threat to pets and livestock. They thrive in areas with moist, decaying materials, manure, and urine-soaked straw. Maintaining clean surroundings and removing waste regularly are key to controlling their population.
Flesh flies (Sarcophaga species) are larger than house flies, easily recognized by their checkerboard-patterned abdomen. Their bodies are gray with black stripes on the thorax. Unlike other flies, flesh flies give birth to live maggots instead of laying eggs. The maggots are typically found in spoiled meat, decomposing flesh, and dog droppings. Flesh flies are often spotted near dead animals and snails.
Flesh flies can complete their life cycle in just eight days. They are usually found near decaying organic matter. Spotting large, slow-moving flies with checkered abdomens could signal a flesh fly infestation.
Our fly control process begins with a comprehensive inspection of your property. We search for fly breeding grounds, including garbage areas, stagnant water, and decomposing organic matter. Our team identifies different fly species such as blow flies, drain flies, and more.
We also assess plumbing for leaks and blockages that might be contributing to the problem. Using advanced detection tools, we locate larvae and adult flies in hidden areas. This inspection allows us to tailor treatments to effectively tackle your specific fly infestation.
Ensure your indoor and outdoor areas are cleaned before our technician arrives. This allows us to focus on the fly infestation with better precision. Our team will inspect your property for underlying issues, including possible plumbing problems that could contribute to the fly problem.
For drain flies, we use specific products to treat active flies and larvae within the drains. We also spray near food preparation areas, avoiding direct contact with surfaces. Traps are placed in areas where fly activity is highest.
Rocklin Pest Control provides a monthly fly control plan that includes in-depth inspections of your property. We focus on high-risk areas like drains, garbage zones, and stagnant water to catch fly problems early.
We employ safe, environmentally friendly treatments targeting species such as drain flies, stable flies, and blow flies. With regular monthly visits, we offer a lasting solution to keep your property fly-free all year round.
