The American dog tick, or wood tick, is a common pest in most parts of the U.S., excluding the Rocky Mountain region. These ticks are brown with grayish-white markings and can grow from 3/16” to 5/8” when engorged. They are oval-shaped and flat, with larvae having six legs and adults eight.
While they favor domestic dogs, these ticks can also bite humans and spread diseases such as Rocky Mountain spotted fever. Spring and early summer are when exposure is most likely. Regular pet checks and yard maintenance are important in preventing tick issues.
Brown Dog Ticks are reddish-brown parasites that commonly infest dogs and are especially common in warm regions like California. When dogs aren’t available, they may also bite humans.
Adult ticks are typically 1/8″ long but swell to 1/2″ after a blood meal. They have six legs as larvae, gaining eight legs as nymphs and adults. It’s crucial to remove them from pets right away to prevent health concerns. Regular inspections of your pets and keeping their areas clean can help control infestations.
Pacific Coast ticks, found in shrublands and along trails from Oregon to Baja California, are also present in Rocklin. They are most active during the cooler months, particularly April and May. Adults prefer feeding on large mammals like deer, cattle, and horses but will bite dogs and humans as well.
These ticks are known carriers of diseases like Rocky Mountain spotted fever, tularemia, and bovine anaplasmosis. They are also linked to tick-bite paralysis in livestock. About 11% of adult Pacific Coast ticks carry bacteria that cause Pacific Coast tick fever, a disease that resembles Rocky Mountain spotted fever.
The Western Black-Legged Tick is commonly found along the Pacific Coast, including in California and British Columbia. It is a primary carrier of Lyme disease in these regions. This tick thrives in forests, grasslands, and areas near water, but may also be found in scrubby habitats. Closely related to the Eastern Black-Legged Tick, it is found mainly on the West Coast.
Adult ticks are most active from winter to early summer. Nymphs, which peak in spring, feed on small animals such as lizards and rodents but rarely target humans or pets. Keeping your yard well-maintained and free of debris can help prevent tick infestations.
Rocklin Pest Control starts every tick control service with a careful inspection of your yard. Our technician will identify high-risk areas like tall grass, bushes, and shaded corners, which are common places for ticks to hide.
We’ll also inspect places where pets frequently play or rest, as these are prime locations for ticks. This thorough assessment ensures we cover every potential tick habitat and create an effective, personalized treatment plan for your property.
We begin our tick control service by discussing your needs—whether indoor, outdoor, or both treatments are required. If you have pets, we often suggest treating both areas for complete coverage. This ensures a custom treatment plan tailored to your property.
Our technician will inspect your yard, targeting tick-prone spots. We treat up to half an acre with long-lasting moisture-activated granules. For larger yards, we can provide extra coverage at an additional cost. For indoor treatments, we apply a targeted solution with a B&G sprayer.
After the initial tick treatment, we offer a no-cost two-week follow-up to ensure that any newly hatched ticks are addressed. Our technician will re-inspect the treated areas inside and outside to confirm that all ticks are gone.
Treatments may be reapplied during this visit to break the tick life cycle and stop re-infestation. We’re committed to keeping your home and yard tick-free, ensuring comfort and safety for your pets and family.
